How can I help?

It’s important to regularly check in on veterans, even those who seem fine. The VA provides resources like the Buddy Check to guide these conversations. You can also get involved with organizations or activities focused on raising awareness and providing support, such as our Veterans’ Honor Run or Guitars for Vets.

01

Reach out to the Veterans you know regularly and check in with them. The VA published this article  which talks about checking in even with a Veteran who seems fine.

02

Get involved with organizations or activities that raise awareness or provide services to reduce this.

03

Volunteer to help a group that you think is doing good work, even if their primary activity doesn’t fit you. Everyone can use help in all forms.

04

Donate to group(s) that you believe are making a positive impact. Conventional wisdom says to research to verify that the majority of your donation is used to support the cause and not for administration or advertising.

Reach out

Reach out to the Veterans you know regularly and check in with them. The VA published this article  which talks about checking in even with a Veteran who seems fine.

  • If you are checking in on a Veteran who is troubled, aim to avoid asking “How can I help?”, and instead make clear and specific offers such as “Let’s get lunch tomorrow” or “Could we catch a show this weekend?” allowing them to still control what they’re ok with.
  • Check out other resources such as this Buddy Check resource put together by the VA for tips and techniques.
